Earth Day Events: Protecting Communities from Wildfires— It’s Not About Industrial ‘Thinning’…

For decades, the U.S. Forest Service has been conducting large logging projects on public lands, telling the public that these mechanical thinning and post-fire logging timber sales will curb and stop wildfires so they will not reach towns. But several major wildfire tragedies and a lot of new science over the past decade have shown the Forest Service’s approach to be not just misguided and ineffective, but counter-productive and dangerous. Dr. Chad Hanson, wildfire scientist with the John Muir Project and author of the book “Smokescreen” will discuss why the focus of the Forest Service and Congress on logging mature and old trees, and post-fire clearcutting in forest wildlands is putting communities at greater risk. Dr. Hanson will describe a different path forward, one that will be far better for forest ecosystems, and will help save homes and lives from wildfires.

  1. I am seventy two years old and have been involved one way or another in the logging industry since I was twelve years old and had to leave home for over thirty years due to the lack of timber sales. I missed the fact that the Forest Serivce has been putty large timber sales up.

    1. Dear Governor,

Please debunk wildfire myth and ends the use of fire to prevent destruction of forestation.

  2. David Maloney fire scientist was sent to investigate the Berkeley Oakland fire the worst fire in US history and he States in his analysis that the Wildfire management that is taken across this country from City to City is really a transformation plan and it endangers firefighters and the public alike. As long as people are too lazy to insist that their home building does not include trees are Forester coming down I don’t hold much hope for Americans they’re lazy self-centered too much into their Creature Comforts for the most part self medicating themselves on sugars to want to have to deal with anything uncomfortable like building a home out of Cobb or Straw Bale or bottles which are all on YouTube how to do

  3. In Monterey County they’ve cut down 2000 beautiful old eucalyptus trees and the monarch butterflies have disappeared as the eucalyptus disappear. Those 2000 trees sucked in 2,000 tons of carbon a year and something like 55,000 pounds of oxygen their leaves caught the pollution in this area and their trunks absorbed it so when they cut them down and ship them all that is released back into the atmosphere I don’t think there’s much hope for us the powers that be are very very evil and unfortunately the Technologies they give us we are too eager to use. It’s it’s going to be up to the individual to do his and her share in Urgent ways and do we have the gumption?
